The New Hatch Act How-To
For Political Involvement by Letter Carriers

Hatch Act Reform has gone from legislative battle to law and now offers active letter carriers the opportunity for political involvement. Listed below are the guidelines on what active letter carriers can and cannot do in politics.

KEEP IN MIND:

The only restrictions we have are on activities in PARTISAN elections. A partisan election is one where the candidate is identified by political party on the ballot. (This does not include races for party office, such as delegate or precinct committeeperson). These tend to be statewide and national races, like President, Governor, U.S. Senate and State Legislature. We have no restrictions on NON-PARTISAN political activities, which are elections, usually for a local office like school board or judge, where the candidates do not run as a representative of a political party.

What Letter Carriers "can do"!

* CAN volunteer or manage a partisan political campaign *

* CAN hold office in a political party or club *

* CAN serve as a delegate to a political nominating convention *

* CAN raise money for COLCPE from other NALC members and their families *

What Letter Carriers "cannot do"!

* CANNOT run for partisan political office *

* CANNOT raise money from non-union members or directly for a partisan candidate or campaign *

Always Remember to Be:

* Off the Clock *

* Out of Uniform and Government Vehicles *

* Away from the Workplace *
